Hope United Methodist Church sent volunteers to help package meals for Meals From the Heartland. Meals From the Heartland, which is located in W. Des Moines, empowers people to feed the hungry by packaging meals for people around the globe, across the United States and in central Iowa. Hope volunteers packaged 9,504 rice & soy meals during their 2 hour shift. This translates to feeding 68 people every minute while there. Each meal consists of 1 cup each of soy and rice with a tablespoon of spices and dry vegetables. The church also presented a monetary gift from the church to help cover the cost of the meals they prepared.
Meals From the Heartland is a non-profit organization that invites children and adults to package meals at the Patty Cownie Packaging Center (357 Lincoln St., W. Des Moines). Individuals and groups can sign up for 2 hour shifts offered at a variety of times and days each week. The Tenth Annual Hunger Fight will occur on August 29- Sept 2 at HyVee Hall where thousands of volunteers will come together to package nutritious meals.
